(Fontana, CA) The battle ground was set for the 4th event in the Redline Time Attack Series at the Autoclub Raceway in Fontana, California. Many of the top teams from around the Nation converged onto this high speed track to do battle for the quickest time in their respective class. Redline Time Attack is a full weekend event consisting of a Saturday practice day and the main event on Sunday. As a first time ever for Time Attacks, teams and drivers were given the chance to take on the challenging full course oval intergrated with the inner road course at Autoclub Speedway for the ultimate Time Attack track.
Enter the Sportcar Motion crew from San Marcos, CA owned and operated by Loi Song. These gifted crew members have crafted one of the top Time Attack - Modified Class FWD vehicles in the nation. Their weapon of choice, a '93 Honda Civic Hatchback (EG) powered by a K24/K20 engine. For the past several Time Attack events, Skunk2 has helped supply the Sportcar Motion team with parts, technical advice, and even mechanical service so that they could dominate their class. This Time Attack weekend was no different to them. The crew had their eyes set on the prize and knew that they would have to up their game on this unique track. A new front splitter and rear spoiler were added to help give the car the stability it would need on the high speed banking.
The Sportcar Motion team geared up and headed out for the few practice sessions on Saturday with high hopes that the recent changes to the aerodynamics of the car would allow the EG Civic to crank out an impressive time. Tim Kuo, the long-time driver for Sportcar Motion, clocked in an impressive 1:53.541 laptime. This laptime was on par with many of the street modified AWD and RWD vehicles which left the team feeling extremely confident. This was aiming to be an interesting Time Attack weekend.
It would not be a race event however without a few unforeseen mishaps and the Sportcar Motion team was no exception as they blew their primary motor during one of the practice sessions on Saturday. Without the right parts needed to fix their motor in the pit garage that day, they packed up their tools, loaded the car back onto the trailer, and made the two hour trek back down to San Marcos to grab their back up motor. Even with an exhausted crew, everyone was ready and more than willing a to put in the work required to get them to the winners circle. Loi summed up that Saturday night: "We practiced on Saturday with a time of 1.53 and then blew the motor. We went back and pulled an all nighter and then came back to the track at 8am for tech inspections." Undoubtedly, their efforts would have paid off on Sunday.
The crew sent Tim off onto the grid early Sunday morning for some more laps in hopes that the new motor would be at least as strong as the now defunct primary motor. Within a few laps, any concerns were eliminated right away. The backup motor (which ran Skunk2 Tuner Series Stage 2 cams instead of the stage 3 cams in the primary motor) surprisingly allowed the SportCar Motion EG to turn over a full second faster per lap. After a few minor tweaks, on one of the final laps, Tim managed to turn out a blazing 1:51.635 lap time taking the win for the FWD Modified Class. The second place driver was 5 seconds behind the Sportcar Motion EG and the third place vehicle was almost a full 10 seconds behind, showing how fast the Sportcar Motion EG was. Loi, Tim, and the rest of the Sportcar Motion crew had another win under their belts. "We are very happy with the Skunk2 products. They perform very well, camber kits work great, and gave me all the settings needed. We ran stage 2 or 3 cams depends on the track conditions. Overall, we are very pleased with Skunk2."
Loi and the Sportcar Motion team have a few more plans in the near future with different tire sizes and some forced induction via a Rotrex Supercharger from Skunk2’s sister company, Kraftwerks USA (http://www.kraftwerksusa.com).
